Work titles don’t matter, value does.
We get paid for bringing value to the marketplace. We get paid for value and not time. Jim Rohn

We primarily get paid not for what we do, but for the value we bring. This was such a hard realisation for me to accept, but one of the most invaluable insights I’ve had in my career is that I primarily get paid for the value I bring and for my contributions to the marketplace, oouch!

My income is a reflection of my value to the marketplace.

Please note that this is not my value towards society say as a husband or father, but my value to the marketplace. It’s possible to be a valuable member of my family, but not a valuable member of the marketplace.

It is less about my title than it is about the value I bring. A lot of people focus on increasing their salaries or changing their job titles rather than increasing their value. The marketplace rewards those who contribute the most value and rewards them handsomely with a ‘pay’.

I often wonder why some people make $500 - $1000 an hour whilst others make a minimum wage. The hard honest truth is that others have learnt to become more valuable in the marketplace.

Think of it this way. If you made me $1 Billion dollars in the marketplace, how much do you think I’ll be willing to pay you? Even if I paid you $100 million dollars, that’s way less compared to the money you made for me.

The more valuable you are in the marketplace = the more money you will make, so think value and not titles.

Become better at working on yourself.

I call this becoming stellar. Become the best and give it your best. Work hard on yourself than you do for your boss. The best person to work on is you. The better you become, the more valuable you’ll be. If you are going to sleep at 3 am it better be because you are working hard on yourself and not for someone else.

I’m not saying do not work hard at your job, all I'm saying is work harder on yourself.

Wake up at 5 am and read that book because you’ll become better. Finish that course, even if it means missing your lunch breaks because you’re becoming better.

Become better at working for yourself than you do for someone else.

Change your life’s philosophy.

Sometimes our way of thinking is holding us back. A lot of us have an old mindset that no longer exists in a modern-day marketplace. We believe the same old things about money, the government as well as the marketplace that stopped existing years ago.

Focus on changing yourself and on improving your thinking. The world is constantly changing, and so should you.
